the defamation of rock n' roll
Let me just start out by stating that the MTV Music Awards have become nothing but a way for hip hop and rap "musicians" (since that is what they seem to be labeled...) to showcase their riches, fame and otherwise good fortune. It is really sad to see what has become of the music industry today. It seems that good looks, fashion, and obnoxious confidence is what gets musicians fame today - forget real musical talent. What happened to the days when musicians actually cared about the art of music?
My rant stems from watching only about 30 minutes of the 3 hour long crap-of-an-awards show on MTV...and then was re-ingnited when I tuned into a local radio show on my way to work this morning. They brought up many valid points that only added to my frustrations and disappointments in today's music industry. One particular statement made on the radio show that sticks in my mind is "The Beatles were somewhat successful musicians (note sarcasism...) and they didn't have the need to get where they did by flaunting the millions of dollars they made." I just don't get it. I want to PUKE when celebrities have this attitude that we should worship them as if they are gods...simply because they found a way to make millions of dollars. OK, so maybe some of this anger stems from jealousy on my part...but does it have to constantly be rubbed in my face??
Why can't I turn on the MTV Music Awards and actually see other types of music honored other than rap and hip hop?? Don't get me wrong...I see the talent in some rap and hip hop stars that needs to be credited appropriately (I own 3 Eminem albums). But what about diversity? What about representing rock bands? And to that note...what happened to good old fashioned rock n' roll bands? They certainly aren't what they used to be. Where are the Fleetwood Macs, the Led Zepplins, the Allman Brothers, the Bob Dylans of OUR time?
