battle of the bands
One of the many cool features that come with my Sirius satellite radio is storing up to 30 artists and/or songs in the memory function. Once this artist or song is played on any of their 200 stations, you are alerted with a little "beep" noise and the artist or song is displayed on the screen. You can choose to listen or not to listen to the artist/song at that time...all the while, more memory alerts continue to notify you of stored artists/songs that may be playing at that time. You can basically make Sirius your own personalized radio - constantly listening to all your favorite artists/songs. Awesome.
However, what I've also come to realize with this feature is that these memory alerts are just another form of popularity contests. A Battle of the Bands, if you will.
"beep!" Pearl Jam..."beep" 311..."beep" Rusted Root...oh the decisions!
In a critical time as this, I am forced to choose between my favorites - and these quick-thinking decisions have surprised me into realizing my inner music cravings. For example, The Black Crowes usually trump anything I have on...with the exception of Ben Harper on an occasion or two. Tom Petty trumps Sublime, yet Sublime trumps Dave Matthews. Lauryn Hill trumps Fleetwood Mac (really only because Lauryn is so rarely heard), but yet Fleetwood trumps James Taylor. And the "trump"-ing goes on and on...
It's a cut throat world out there in Sirius memory notifications.

I experienced this for the first time on our road trip this weekend. It creates an urgency to make a decision that I just can't handle.
